VTB Bank history is the history of establishing a standard-bearer for the Russian banking industry. Nowadays, VTB plays the key role in lending to the economy and developing the retail banking market in Russia.

The Bank for Foreign Trade (Vneshtorgbank) was established in October 1990 with governmental support to encourage foreign economic transactions of Russian enterprises. It appeared in response to the country’s growing needs for banking institutions capable of satiating the economy with modern financial services.

After the Group-wide rebranding in 2006, all VTB’s subsidiaries in Russia and abroad began to operate under VTB brand.

VTB is a leader in the national banking sector. The Bank holds a sustainable competitive position in all segments of the market. The Russian Government is VTB’s major shareholder, with a 77.5% stake.

Over its history, VTB has managed to gain a foothold in the Russian banking market, win international recognition and get the name of one of the country’s most reliable banks with sound financial standing.

In keeping with its best traditions, being always socially active the Bank backs up Russian athletes representing our country in world sport arenas. VTB has been supporting and cooperating with:

  • Russian Olympic Committee;
  • Russian Basketball Federation;
  • Figure Skating Federation of Russia;
  • Volleyball Federation of Russia;
  • Russian Golf Association;
  • Russian Boxing Federation;
  • Russian Sports Gymnastics Federation.
VTB Bank sponsors several clubs including the Professional football club CSKA and the Professional ice hockey club MVD.

The Russian Football Union is a long-term partner of VTB. The Bank supported the international championship CIS and Baltic States Championship Cup – 2007- 2008.

In 2007, under cooperation with the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) VTB supported an international athletics contests as well as the 11th World IAAF Championship in Osaka, Japan (August 24 – September 2) and the 5th World Athletics Final in Stuttgart, Germany (September 22-23).

For 3 years VTB has been supporting the rally team KAMAZ-Master as an official partner. Sponsor support of the Russian team, which has been getting the main prizes of the legendary race Paris-Dakar for many years, is the logical development of cooperation between the Bank and JSC KAMAZ - the leading manufacturer of truck transport.   

VTB acted as the general sponsor of the Anniversary ice show “Tatiana Tarasova and her students” which took place on February 13, 2007. It was dedicated to 60 years anniversary of the great trainer who brought up 11 Olympic skating champions.  

In 2007, the Youth festival of the basketball sports club “Sports around” took place in Moscow with support from VTB. Its goal was to reinforce the role of sports and physical culture as well as health promotion and shaping of teenagers’ healthy lifestyle.

VTB supports the Non-governmental organization Volleyball Federation of Russia on the regular basis in preparation of the Russia men’s national team for participation in the international contests.

In 2007, VTB donated funds to the Russian automobile federation to arrange the annual Automobile sports champions awards ceremony (2007) and to hold IX annual RAF conference.

The bank assisted the St.Petersburg Fencing Federation in conduction of the World fencing championship (September 27 – October 7, 2007).

VTB renders financial support to:

  • Russian Sports Gymnastics Federation;
  • Russian Chess Federation;
  • Russian Boxing Federation;
  • All-Russian Physical Culture and Sports Association Dynamo;
  • Special Automobile Programs Fund;
  • National Badminton Development Fund;
  • Sports Development Support Fund;
  • Moscow Sports Veterans Charity Fund and other organizations.
In 2008, the bank became the general sponsor of the national women basketball team. Several unofficial games will take place prior to the Olympic Games in Beijing within the framework of this cooperation. A joint VTB Cup contest was also planned to be held. The best world teams – national teams of Russia, France, the Czech Republic, Spain - will compete for the main prize.

While performing its charity and sponsor activity VTB sees its mission in protection and increase of the national heritage of Russia whether it is cultural, spiritual or historical heritage or economy and health.

Apart from financing of sports events, the representatives of the Bank personally take part in the events, proving by personal example the advantages of healthy lifestyle.  On April 5, 2008 the Olympic Flame arrived from Istanbul to St.Petersburg where the previous stage of the relay race had finished. The 20km route of the Russian relay race started at the Victory Square and ended at the Palace square. The relay race consisted of 80 stages 250 m each. President and Chairman of the Management Board of VTB Bank Mr.Andrei Kostin carried the Olympic Flame at one of the stages.
